Reading Taiwanese discounts (打折)
In Taiwan a discount is written as the share of the price you still pay, in tenths. 8折 (bā zhé) means you pay 80%, i.e. 20% off; 85折 means you pay 85%, 15% off; 79折 is 21% off. The smaller the number, the bigger the discount, which is the opposite of a Western "% off" sign. 5折 is half price, and 買一送一 (buy one get one free) also works out to 5折. 折上折 means a second discount is applied to the already reduced price: 8折 then 9折 is 0.8 × 0.9 = 72折, not 7折. Switch the entry style at the top and every result shows both forms side by side, so you can read a Taiwanese shelf tag or a foreign online shop with equal ease.
Unit-price tips
- Compare per gram, millilitre or piece rather than per package: the larger pack is not always cheaper, especially during promotions.
- Make sure both quantities use the same unit (g vs kg, ml vs L) before trusting the percentage.
- For "buy N get M free" the true discount is M ÷ (N + M): buy two get one free is 33% off (about 6.7折), not 50%.
- A "second item 6折" deal equals 8折 on the pair; ask yourself whether you need two in the first place.
