Taiwanese units you meet every day
Taiwan uses the metric system alongside units inherited from the Japanese era. Property listings quote floor area in 坪 (ping): 1 坪 is 3.3058 m², roughly two tatami mats, so a 30 坪 apartment is about 99 m². Farmland is sold by the 甲 (jia, 9,699 m² or about 2,934 坪) and its tenth, the 分 (fen). Traditional markets weigh fruit, meat and tea by the 台斤 (600 g), 台兩 (37.5 g) and 台錢 (3.75 g): one 台斤 is 16 台兩, and one 台兩 is 10 台錢. Carpenters and interior designers still quote furniture in 台尺 (30.3 cm) and 台寸 (3.03 cm). Pick a category and two units; the table below shows the same quantity in every unit of that category so you can compare them at a glance.
Notes
- Results are rounded to six significant digits with trailing zeros removed. The factors behind them are exact definitions (1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 坪 = 3.305785 m²), so converting back and forth does not accumulate error.
- Temperature uses formulas, not factors: °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15.
- Data sizes: storage makers label 1 KB = 1000 bytes, while Windows and many apps count 1024. Use the toggle to match the number you see on screen.
- One 分 of farmland is a tenth of a 甲 (about 293 坪). One hectare (公頃) is 10,000 m², about 1.03 甲.
- The cup here is the 240 ml measuring cup common in Taiwan and on US nutrition labels; a Japanese recipe cup is 200 ml. The 台升 (1.8039 L) survives mainly in rice shops and old recipes.
