How the lunar calendar works
The Chinese lunar calendar (農曆, also called 陰曆 or the farmers' calendar) starts each month on the new moon, so a month has 29 or 30 days and twelve of them fall about eleven days short of a solar year. To stay aligned with the seasons, a thirteenth month, the leap month (閏月), is inserted roughly every two or three years; it repeats the number of the month before it, which is why "閏六月" exists. The 24 solar terms (節氣) such as 清明 and 冬至, by contrast, follow the sun and fall on almost the same Gregorian date every year. Years are also named with the sixty-year stem-and-branch cycle (干支) and the twelve zodiac animals.
When you need it
- Finding this year's date for a lunar birthday, a memorial day (忌日) or a family 拜拜 that is always kept on the lunar date.
- Checking when Lunar New Year, 端午 (5/5), 中元 (7/15), 中秋 (8/15) and the first and fifteenth of each month (初一、十五) fall.
- Reading the lunar date on temple notices, wedding invitations and the 農民曆, or filling in a lunar birth date on a fortune-telling or 八字 form.
- The converter covers 1900–2100. Dates follow Taiwan time; the lunar day changes at midnight, not at the new moon instant.
