Why Taiwan counts years from 1912
The Republic of China (中華民國) was founded in 1912, which became 民國元年, year one of the Republic. Taiwan's official documents have counted years from it ever since, so 2026 is 民國 115 年. Western year minus 1911 gives the ROC year; add 1911 to go back. Years before 1912 are written 民前: 1911 is 民前 1 年, 1900 is 民前 12 年.
Where you will meet ROC dates
- National ID cards, health insurance cards and driving licences print birth dates as 民國 years, often in a packed form such as 0800101 (80/01/01).
- Government forms, tax filings and court documents expect ROC dates; many online forms accept either but display ROC.
- Receipts, uniform invoices, bank statements and food expiry labels frequently use YYY/MM/DD with three ROC digits, e.g. 115/11/05.
- Western dates are standard in business e-mail and software, so the two systems are constantly converted back and forth.
足歲 and 虛歲
Taiwan counts age two ways. 足歲 is the exact age on official forms: you turn a year older on each birthday. 虛歲 is the traditional count used for temple rites: a baby is one at birth and everyone gains a year at Lunar New Year, so it runs one or two years higher. The calculator shows both, the days you have lived and the time to your next birthday.
