BMI
Where you sit on the Taiwan adult scale
- Healthy weight for your height (BMI 18.5–24)
Categories follow the adult standard of the Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan. For adults 18 and over only.
How BMI is calculated
BMI (body mass index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. A 170 cm, 70 kg adult has a BMI of 70 ÷ 1.7² ≈ 24.2. This calculator applies the cut-offs published by Taiwan's Health Promotion Administration (國民健康署). They are stricter than the WHO's because Asian populations carry more metabolic risk at the same BMI: overweight starts at 24 rather than 25, and obesity at 27 rather than 30. The healthy weight range shown is simply the weight that would put you between BMI 18.5 and 24 at your height, and the distance to the nearest line tells you how many kilograms separate you from the next category.
Taiwan adult BMI categories
- Below 18.5: underweight.
- 18.5 to just under 24: normal (healthy) weight.
- 24 to just under 27: overweight.
- 27 to just under 30: mild obesity.
- 30 to just under 35: moderate obesity.
- 35 and above: severe obesity.
What BMI does not tell you
- It is for adults aged 18 and over. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific growth charts instead.
- Muscular people such as athletes and weightlifters can read as overweight with little body fat; older adults may keep a normal BMI while losing muscle; and it does not apply during pregnancy.
- Waist circumference matters as much as BMI. The HPA defines abdominal obesity as 90 cm or more for men and 80 cm or more for women, measured level with the navel after breathing out normally.
- Treat BMI as a first screen. Talk to a doctor or dietitian before making large changes to diet or exercise.
